Mind Map: Your Ideal "Office" Space

Uses: Use it as a planning tool for creating a new office, work, creative, or studio space. Use it to help you remodel or update your existing space.

Background: I'm fascinated about how a physical environment can support, encourage, and inspire. Traditional "office spaces" have been mostly functional and lack inspiration, to say the least. I'll be using this template as I move into my new creative space.

How to: Click on the image above and see an expanded version via a web page. Start in the far right hand corner and answer a few general questions. Then proceed through the map as you wish. Add or expand on areas as necessary.

Feature Article: Talking in Circles

I know many college students have this experiences - a very cool professor who does something extraordinary that makes learning a pleasure and leaves a big impression.

For me, that person was a professor of Sociology who often  lectured outside of the classroom - literally in the great outdoors. Not unusual, I know - read on, it gets better...

When he held class outside, we didn't sit in the cool grass under a tall shade tree. We didn't sit in an empty patio area with chairs and tables or on anything that even resembled a "traditional" learning environment.

Instead, we sat in an abandoned fountain in the center of "old" campus. The fountain consisted of a large statue in the middle, and the water was collected in a round pool surrounding the statue.

The circular pool walls were about two feet high, and created a nice although unusual bench for a group of 12 students. We sat facing the statue. Between the large statue and the makeshift bench, there were a few feet of empty space.

This "open space" was discovered by my professor.  His use - a place to walk and talk and walk and talk more.

My professor was walking AND talking in circles, literally. :-)

As I "listened" to his lectures, I would often wonder what people walking by thought about him. I would think about how neat it was that were outside. And I used to wonder if he ever felt dizzy walking around the fountain so many times.

As amazing as it is that I can remember this detail, I don't remember the actual content of any of his lectures. Apparently, he didn't have to say ANYTHING.

He made his point brilliantly by what he did, and in the environment he created for us to learn.

As a Sociologist, he was simply trying to teach us how people act, perceive the world, and interact in groups. He wanted us to open our minds, look at a different perspective, and be open to learning something new.

To do that, he didn't have to dazzle us with words of wisdom that we would never forget. He didn't have to entertain us, and he didn't even really have to give a lecture that made sense. (remember, he talked in circles)

He simply had to show up and talk. That's it! The environment did his work. The physical environment that he taught from was MORE important as what he said!

I wonder how this idea is applicable today for you, and in this moment. How do you go about creating your own personal fountain, from which you can "lecture from" or more significantly just show up?

How exactly do you get your message across without saying a word?

I'm fascinated by this idea and very interested in hearing your thoughts. Drop me an email...

Now, go create it!

p.s. Email me and let me know what you think about this idea...

"The future has yet to be created."

"the snow storm I have been waiting for!! I am not going into work!!"

"It appears by the subject of this weeks article as well as your "blank" map and reiterated by your picture of "nothing" that it is time you not only found some "SPACE" but that you can find empty space. Question I have is, if you do find that "SPACE" can you enter it without it disappearing?"

picture #2:

???

" 3 cup hangers waiting to be tuned upside down and screwed into a shelf"

"what?"

   Shorts

1) I've noticed that most of my computer desktop icons are blue, are yours? Shorts recommends purple as the new "standard" icon color.

2) My bag of mini pretzels (fat free, high sodium, btw) includes this info - Member Snack Food Association An International Trade Association. Does this actually SELL more pretzels? Is this important to you or are they filling up extra space???

3) I voted in the Georgia primary election last Tuesday. Besides the presidential race, I voted on my preference for the Georgia state flag. It took me a total of about 25 seconds to cast my electronic ballot. I felt compelled to stand there and make it look like I was reading the instructions c a r e f u l l y.

4) ...I also walked s  l  o  w  l  y  to my car.... I guess the entire experience (round trip) took less than seven and a half minutes...

Thanks for reading - see on March 23rd!
