Feature Article: Zip
I'm finding this weeks issue of
Half Baked extremely difficult to
write. I've started several different articles, actually written
enough content for many articles, and I still feel like I have nothing
of consequence to share.
Sure, I could write blurbs about each of these. Maybe even come up
with an average article about something that gets your attention,
makes you chuckle, or makes you think.
But what would I get out of it?
Seriously, I've come to a place in my life where an average experience
of writing doesn't cut it for me. Instead, I seek to find something
compelling enough to me to share with you.
This week, I've found myself doing everything in the world besides
writing. I've been rearranging my office space, writing my own visual
business plan, and even taking an unusual nap in the middle of the
day.
So as my self imposed deadline nears, the only thing I can think of
is ZIP (defined as NOTHING). And for those of you who read Half Baked regularly, you
will certainly not be surprised. Clearly a recurring theme.
In acknowledging my own experience, I've come to realize that
nothing in fact is what I'm supposed to be writing about. It is
compelling to me and has been on my mind for a few weeks.
On the other hand, if nothing has been on my mind, then what is
taking up that space, I'm wondering... And see how easy it is to
spend time on nothing - you've just done it. ;-)
Here we go, this is true story. For one day, a friend went
into his office with the intention of not working AT ALL. That is,
my friend's objective was to look busy to his employer, his staff,
and to his co-workers, and at the same time accomplish NOTHING.
My friend did something that was totally out of character. And since
I've heard his story, I've been intrigued by this kind of nothingness,
not to mention his wit, curiosity, and sense of adventure. Certainly a
whole other story!
For me, in my world where I'm constantly trying to "add value" to each
of my clients, I find my friends experience enlightening. (to say the
least)
You see, I've spent a tremendous amount of time and energy in my life
as a consultant and as a coach trying to prove my value to my clients
and prospects. That is, what can I do or say that makes you think or
prove that I'm worth blank dollars.
What information can I give you? What can I help you decide? What
can I show you? What results can I help you achieve? How in the world
can I prove my value to YOU?
Before coaching and consulting, it was about proving my value to my
employers. What "skill set" did I posses, and how would my skills be a
vital asset to the company and the department. And on and on...
My friend didn't have to create anything of "value", solve any
problems, or help someone learn something new! He simply had to show
up! And in doing so, I'm certain that his company was better off for
him being just being there!!!
For that day (of doing nothing) his value was in his BEING and not in
his doing.
I know, I've left out many details. Call me, I'll give you his number
and he can tell you more. (joke, I won't)
For now, I want you to know this. You are already more valuable
than anything you can do!
Ah, that feels like more than nothing.
Get this, and I invite you to come hang out with me. We can do nothing
together.
:-)

Comments on picture in the

"that we live to survive our

"Carbonated

"Commercialism at its worst. Imagine blocking the view of such a
beautiful stream! Then in another sense it represents the competition
of trash over nature. I am sure that unless the cozy and can are owned
by you, or me for that matter, they will end up in the stream.
And on the other hand, the color difference is very striking."
"Huhhhh!!
It’s a tight fit."

Shorts
1) I'm still trying to understand the
"reason" behind "information/advertising" kiosks at the drive
through bank lanes. Is it to hide the fact that it now takes longer
for my transaction to be processed, or is it to make me feel better
about wasting a longer amount of time?
2) Isn't garbage something you DON'T want to see? Why then, the
see through (clear or wire) waste baskets?
3) Did you read the introduction? Just checking. ;-) Please join me
