Feature Article: Twinz

It's true.  I have a womb-mate, a body double, a twin, or whatever you want to call it. We were born on the same day, share the same birthday (really!), share mannerisms, and share much enthusiasm for life!

Being a twin hasn't always been a pleasant experience for me. I disliked being dressed similarly. I didn't appreciate people calling me by my sister's name. And I always regretted that people assumed they knew me because they knew my twin sister.

What I did like about being a twin was being known of, not really worrying about what to wear (this was decided by committee, and I wasn't a member of it), and people trying to figure out which "one" I was.

I think BECAUSE people were always trying to figure me out, I decided whoever I ended up being, that someone would be something unexpected, someone different!

I excelled at being a contrarian - college choice, is an example. My twin was interested in Eastern.  I immediately looked at Western (seriously) and ended up at Southern!

She wanted a new dress, and I opted for a new pair of slacks. She was into art. I went into business. She liked to look good.  I liked to be comfortable. And on and on and on!

Through the years, I've learned that my ability to see things different (or differently) is due to the fact that I wanted to be different.

I've learned that there is tremendous value in seeing beyond the obvious. I've learned that there are an unlimited number of solutions to most problems. I've learned that seeing things differently requires willingness.

I've experienced how quickly a different perspective, a simple idea, or a personal challenge DOES change a business, a person's experience, and / or a person's life.

And most importantly, I've realize that if I had a choice to be born a twin or not, I would definitely choose to do it all over exactly the same way. I appreciate not only the gift of having a twin, but of BEING a twin!

Thanks, Jayne, for being my twin! Happy Birthday!  :-)

A Picture

Being able to see different perspectives is a great asset!

Please send me your interpretations of this picture to picture091603@bizsmart.net. I will compile the listing of the most thought provoking and publish in the next issue of Half-Baked. Remember to send me your city of residence!

With permission, I will also publish your name and city.

Comments from readers on the August 25th picture

"Granny Smiths and natural peanut butter.... Mmmmmmm...!"

"Your picture reminds me of 'The Story of O' that I heard on a equal opportunities course.  e.g. those of ethnic minority spend a lot of time trying to blend in so as not to be seen as different, and yet in so many other areas we try to stand out be seen as different special. Is difference special worse or just different. What ever it is, it is not something to be judged."

"One good apple don't spoil the whole bunch!"

"The photo made me think of upstate New York, where I used to live, and apple picking at Greene Brothers Orchards, when our family would spend a fall Sunday afternoon with bushel baskets, and climbing on short ladders to pick tart red or green apples right off the tree. If the branches were low enough, we sometimes would pick those apples first."

1) People CREATE systems and procedures. Systems aren't more powerful than the people!  People can also create BETTER systems and procedures that include efficiency, kindness, decency, and just plain common sense.

2) I was recently asked, "where do butterflies goes when it rains?" and didn't have an answer.

3) I ran a 5k road race in my neighborhood on Labor Day. While walking back to my house, I crossed paths with two neighbors. One neighbor asked if "I won". The other apparently didn't notice my perspiration, road race number, or the coveted t-shirt hanging over my shoulder. She asked, "did I have a nice walk?" (What the heck?)

4) Big thanks to everyone who sent emails on the premier issue of Half-Baked! Keep the comments coming! :-)

Thanks for reading - see you in a few weeks!
